On The voice Season 21’s live top 13 results show Tuesday, 10 contestants advanced through the public vote, after which the three lowest vote-geters performed for the instant save. And the most surprising singer to land in the bottom three is no doubt Team Kelly’s fiery soul stylist Gimani, who has consistently delivered since she turned four chairs with her very first performance.

Back during the blind additions, Gimani made the new coach Ariana Grande’s “POV” so completely her own that Ariana actually told her, “this is Your Song now. Take it! “And since that prime moment, Gimney earned the first standing of the live playoffs, John Legend compared her to the almighty Jasmine Sullivan, and Kelly Clarkson even said that Gimney’s voice is” why the show exists. “

So, to see this powerhouse at risk of going home this week – before even making the top 10 – was a shocker. Besides Gymani’s impeccable overall track record, on Monday’s top 13 performance show, she’s back to her church roots with a commanding performance of Christian pop band For King & Country’s “God Only Knows,” supported by a gospel choir, and I’d assumed this would be a big hit with conservative viewers. (Religious performances have historically done well on The voice – Think of Craig Wayne Boyd’s “The Old Dirty Cross,” Meghan Linsey’s “Amazing Grace,” Paxton Ingram’s “Break Every Chain,” and at least three Jordan Smith performances.)

Gymani’s coach seemed more surprised than anyone by the result. “Not on my best vocal day I can sing as rad as you. You’re so incredible. I have no idea how you are in the bottom three. I literally do not. It blows my mind. … I did it for 20 years, and you inspire me and make me want to sing better, and you push me, “Kelly explains, repeatedly betting America to vote Gimney to next week’s top 11 round.

Gymani would face heavy competition from the other two contestants singing for the instant hit: Team Ariana’s old-pop-rock firecracker Rileigh Plank (my personal favorite contestant from Season 21) and Team Legend’s Diva Shadile. But it is not Rather How surprising to see one of them for elimination (though team Ariana’s pitchy father / son duo Jim & Sasha Allen Really Should have been in the bottom three instead). Ryleigh, despite seemingly possessing all the elements of a budding superstar, has always been an underdog and somehow has nothing to do with viewers – she had to be rescued by Ariana last week. Meanwhile, Shadale started out as a front runner, but her funny 80s rock song this week, Tom Cochran’s “Life is a Highway,” was clearly her undo. And explicitly a steward Knew It was her odor, as she looked bruised and defeated before host Carson Dali even finished reading Tuesday’s results.

That being said, none of the talented women had a shot at winning the Save. But Shadeil looked repulsed by this week’s events, and her cover of Faith Hill’s “Breathe” – another funny song choice, especially at the do-or-die moment – started completely shaky. I almost assumed she could not hear herself – it was What Ordinary. She did get her groove back at the end of the song, but it was too small, too late. As for Riley, I assumed that her vampy, mighty and highly confident cover of her coach’s own “Dangerous Wife” would galvanize the Arianites to stand the vote, but this is apparently not the case.

When Gimani epically jazzed her way through a fierce and fearless version of Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love,” she was the true standout of the night. Even Carson had to comment afterwards, “that was a Wife. “And so Gimney won the public vote, thereby bitterly sending Shaddai and Riley home.

But even if Gymani has not won the instant save this week, she is already a winner in Live, When before she found her fate she cheekily told Kelly, “I feel like you are my best friend. If you want to be, we can be best friends!” To this, Kelly enthusiastically exclaimed without missing a hit, “We Are Best friends! It’s an incredible thing to be able to call you a friend. You can sing with me anytime, anytime. ”
